Ecosystem. This is the bet of a technology manufacturer that brought not only its most recent worldwide launch in phones but also the MatePadPro (tablet) and its Watch GT2e. What is it about? What is the plan?

The P40 series. This was the announcement of the invitation for the presentation of the awaited P40 Pro in the Colombian market. More than 100 attendees connected to what is already becoming a custom: a virtual press conference. On the screen David Moheno, public relations director of Huawei CBG Latin America with the smartphone that had been globally revealed by Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei, also in a virtual meeting, last March 26. This is the Huawei P40 Pro, water and dust resistant, a reference device in the global industry since the launch of the P9 and the alliance with Leica, one of the most powerful players in the photo technology business, warned Mohedo.

«And this year the P40 is no exception. Then, words more, words less were launched, with the features of the equipment: Leica Quad Ultra Vision camera that includes a 50 megapixel (MP) sensor, a 40 MP ultra wide angle lens, a 12MP telephoto sensor and a camera with 3D depth detection. The phone recognizes gestures and can be controlled without touching it, for example when they are in the kitchen, have their hands busy and need to capture a screen: just a hand gesture as if they were holding something in the air is enough and that’s it, the screen capture is done. The same command is used to pass images in a presentation, shown in a video to the attendees.

Huawei, since it has the alliance with Leica, became the trend-setting brand in photography. That’s why they talk about Golden Snap, which is the ability to capture moments frame by frame. An example: when we are playing basketball and we don’t capture the exact play, what the team does is take frames before and after the original capture. So there is no possibility of missing the shot. But one announcement that caught our attention was the ability to delete people from the pictures without the need of an editing program like Photoshop. A luxury, no doubt, but above all a unique tool in the era where we take more pictures than in all the history of mankind. And thanks to that same tool, if we take a photo when we have a glass in front of us, when there is a reflection -something that happens all the time in museums-, this phone allows us to erase the reflections achieving a better quality photo.

OUR OPINION

Now, being good at photography is not new. But consumers have been asking for similar behavior on video. So they created something they call «visionary videography» . Having a large sensor that helps to have better dynamic range, a wide angle and a telephoto lens thanks to the optical zoom is the basis for achieving this. It has, like other previous models, a «dual video», that means two shots at the same time: A close – up and a wide angle. So the example he used was an elephant. On the same screen of the phone you see the animal almost completely and on the other half of the screen you see the eye. And to add a technology that had already been developed by one of their competitors, they achieved the zoom with directional audio, what it does is that it allows to direct the audio to a single subject inside the camera. It captures only one person’s voice and tries to eliminate or, rather, reduce the ambient sound.

And all this can be done if you have a good processor. Without that you could not do much of what they presented. The P40 Pro comes with the latest generation Kirim 990 processor. It’s a 5G. Modem integrated into the processor to save battery, up to 30% of energy because it increases performance. The connectivity also comes out winning and although in Colombia there is not yet 5G, this phone is ahead of what will come in infrastructure. «It can be connected to all available networks in the world. It is even compatible with all generations of 5G available,» Moheno stressed.

40 Watt supercharger, the fastest and safest in the industry, 75% of the total can be charged in 30 minutes, comes with 4200 milliamps of capacity and, says the manufacturer, in an intense user it holds up to a day and a half. Or even two days. Its operating system is the EMUI 10.1 renewed version, based on Android 10, compatible with all the apps of the app gallery, because these computers are already part of the new strategy of the brand, away from Google.

That is why they highlighted the power of their own ecosystem: «We are already the third largest store in the world, in two years we have managed to reach 170 countries with 400 million active users per month and 1.3 million developers and partners. We aim to have the best applications. There are already more than 144 made in Colombia and for Colombia. Banks, transportation, media, etc». He then recalled the Huawei Share, which is an internal tool to connect with tablets or laptops of the same brand. Up to 500 photographs can be sent instantly, he said, and all viewed with a single interface. And he said: we hope that in two years we can toner all the apps that consumers want. We are still compatible, with the few that are not, you can use the browser with web versions. You can even create shortcuts so that there is no problem.

The strategy

But the strategy of the Chinese brand goes beyond launching a cell phone: it is about launching several devices together to see how they interact and how the consumer gets involved in the whole ecosystem. «The laptop has positioned itself again and even more because of our new behavioral habits, we are working hard on the wearables for health issues and that is why we want to offer the complete experience,» emphasized the Public Relations director for Latin America.

The pending task is in the development of a video editor: «we have certain audio and video mixes, but we don’t have an app of our own to do it yet, we have the best video, why not think about a video editor for these products. There are already third-party apps, but it’s a good idea for a developer.

That’s why they also launched the P40 Lite , a unique «very high medium» range. Without going any further, Huawei says that it holds without problems for games, the experience of use is similar although the processor is not the same, but if your screen and weight make it a good option when it comes to becoming the gammers. «It will perform very well, it doesn’t have the same processor as the Pro but it runs very well for games».

Then appeared the Huawei Watch GT 2e, a «g ran turismo o grand performance». A watch that stands out for two very specific characteristics: one of them is 14 days of battery life -or 30 hours of GPS mode or 24 hours of music reproduction-. It can be charged with songs and, for sportsmen like me, you don’t need to carry your phone around. It has over 100 pre-determined exercise modes with some relatively new ones like parkour or extremes like rock climbing. It is resistant up to 50 meters under water with the possibility of measuring the heart rate there.

And the other is that it measures the oxygen saturation in the blood, something that is regularly done but with existing devices in the clinic. From its previous version it brings improvements to the stainless steel case, built-in crowns and a state-of-the-art breathable rubber strap. It has a full color display and can be charged from zero to 100% in less than an hour.

Then appeared the MatePad Pro , their tablet with which they warn are leading this market segment. «This market was stagnant but here is an opportunity to give a uniform experience because it is a category of versatile devices, full view screen, the first in the world, with 2560 by 1600 pixels to achieve high resolution. Wireless charging of 40Watts with super charger, it fulfills the dream of many to use the same charger of the P40pro, type C, its processor is a Kirim 990 and allows reversible charging, in addition to offering an interface for multi-screen collaboration.

Its magnetic keyboard adjusts itself almost intuitively, distance between the keys is the same as a laptop and the inclination it achieves once the tablet is mounted is 60 to 70 degrees. No additional cables are needed, the pen rests on the keyboard and its screen has more than 4,000 levels of pressure sensitivity, so you could even draw works of art there, says Moheno.

«This is a category that was stagnating all over the world, we decided to reinvent it and equip it with technologies like the screen and the processor, with the pen and the magnetic keyboard. The tablet, hand in hand with the pc, can be productivity, but here you have a calculation editor, take video calls, be totally productive, you can make sketches for art class, and that takes a lot of strength with what we are doing at home, you can do your child’s homework because it resembles all the instruments of art, that’s what we bet, that the tablet is not just for watching movies and videos, no, that happened a long time ago, we want to give it an additional place.
