June was worse
Only 2.5 million foreign tourists arrived in Spain in July. That’s 75 percent less than in 2019. The fall is greater if we take as a reference the first seven months of the year: more than 72 percent.

The arrival of international tourists in Spain sank by 75% in July to 2.5 million, while spending decreased by 79.5% compared to the same month last year, in a context marked by the opening of borders after the state of alarm and the continuous resurgence of covid-19.
Between June and July of this year Spain lost more than 16 million foreign tourists and more than 19,000 million euros of spending by these visitors.
In fact, in the first seven months of the year, the number of tourists who visited Spain plummeted by 72.4% to 13.2 million, while total expenditure fell by 72.6% to 14,291 million euros, according to data released this Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
June was worse
Despite these figures, the falls observed in July are slightly lower than those recorded in June, when after two blank months the arrival of tourists sank by 97.7% and the expenditure made by them by 98.6%.
Along with the drop observed in June in the total expenditure made by international tourists, which was 2,450 million, the average expenditure per visitor also fell, by 17.8%, to 994 euros, and the daily average fell by 23.3%, to 123 euros.
In July, France, with 597,244 visitors, was the main country of residence of the tourists who arrived in Spain, representing more than 24% of the total and a decrease of 58.4% compared to 2019.
Germany and the United Kingdom were next with 432,302 visitors to Spain (65.2% less) and 377,886 (82.5% less), respectively.

However, in the accumulated of the year United Kingdom continues leading the classification with more than 2,4 million tourists in spite of the fall of 76,9 %. Next comes France (with more than 2 million and a drop of 67.2%) and Germany (with almost 1.8 million tourists, 72.9% less).
The Balearic Islands were the main destination for tourists in July, with 23.9% of the total, ahead of Catalonia (17.7%) and the Valencian Community (15.5%).
However, all three communities saw a reduction in foreign visitor arrivals of 74.9%, 81.6% and 69.2%, respectively.
Communities such as Andalusia (71.4%), the Canary Islands (79.1%) and Madrid (87.8%) also recorded significant cuts in the entry of foreign tourists.
