Windows 10 will receive one of the Xbox technologies
Microsoft confirmed the Xbox Series X for November 2020, the new generation console that is about to arrive and that is planted as one of the most powerful on the market does so largely thanks to a series of technologies that the company has called Xbox Velocity Architecture .
An important part of these technologies is the DirectStorage API, this is the one that will allow the next generation games to take advantage of the ultra fast SSD of the console to reduce the loading time as never before. And now we know that this API will also reach Windows 10 and PC games .
DirectStorage + DirectX 12 Ultimate + SSD NVMe: faster PC games than ever
As Microsoft explains, recent advances in both PCIe and SSD technologies, especially those using NVMe technologies , have meant that gaming PCs can handle much higher bandwidths than they did years ago. Anyone who has tried the difference between a hard disk and an SSD understands this in an instant.
Now, the current problem is that modern games load more data than ever before , and although they are also smarter in how they load that data, modern storage APIs are not optimized to handle all the requests that are made and at the same time load the games resources by managing the memory in the most efficient way. As a result, today’s best hardware is not being fully utilized.
IN XATAKAInterview with Jason Ronald, from Xbox Series X: «I don’t think consoles are going to disappear soon»
This is where Microsoft is especially optimizing its Xbox Series X, including an exceptionally fast SSD and technologies such as DirectStorage. What this API does is eliminate that bottleneck that currently limits what games can do even with very advanced hardware and a very fast SSD, so as not to waste the bandwidth of the most modern disks .
DirectStorage is designed to truly harness the full potential of modern gaming hardware and eliminate bottlenecks
Obviously, not all gamers will be able to take advantage of this, since it is designed for the best SSDs available in the market, that is, NVMe due to its high speeds, and those that will come in the future.
DirectStorage will work hand in hand with DirectX 12 Ultimate to take gaming to a new level, taking better advantage of the new SSD and other components such as the impressive NVIDIA 30 Series GPUs. The idea is that in the future, games that take advantage of this new API will not be hindered by the old standards and will be able to really take advantage of everything that modern storage solutions offer .
